I started Creative Wannabe because I decided I was bad at drawing. I chose the name because it’s truly how I felt at the time, and I hoped that maybe one day if I got slightly less bad the name would become ironic. Over the past few years, I’ve worked on honing my illustration skills while working in the design and advertising industries. I’ve seen how successful campaigns come together, and watched as others fell apart. I was able to evaluate media opportunities and make strategic decisions to get creative in front of prospective customers. This has given me a unique eye, a strategic mind, and an extreme love for creating content that resonates with my audience.

Work with me! My professional process:

ILLUSTRATION THAT BRINGS MEANING TO YOUR BRAND

I work closely with brands to create illustrations that inspire, engage, and bring people together. From custom packaging, logos and apparel graphics, to editorial and publication illustration, each project you work on with me is designed to help your product stand out and engage your audience. I work with you on each and every project, ensuring that your customer feels understood, valued and important. With a background in design and advertising, you’re getting the experience of a marketer as well as an illustrator.

Each project includes:

  • Initial briefing session; this will help me understand your project. I’ll provide you with a couple of pricing options, and from there send you an invoice for a 50% deposit for the project before we begin.

  • An art direction meeting; based off the initial brief, we’ll have a chat about how best to capture the look you’re after! Here we get really clear on the style of art and type you’re after.

  • Sketch concepts; this is where the magic starts to happen! I’ll come back to you with a few sketch concepts (the exact amount will be outlined in the briefing stage), and you can make tweaks and changes.

  • Final artwork & rounds of minor revision; this is your chance make little tweaks like “lighter blue” or “no texture” - we’re almost ready to ship your work!

This streamlined, compact process allows us to get straight to the heart of your project and ensure we are creating artwork that hits home with your target audience, with distinct messaging and quality graphics.

Education/career FAQ’s:

Did I get a degree?

  • Yes! I have a Diploma in Graphic Design, an advanced Diploma in Graphic Design and a Bachelors in Visual Communication Design. I have worked in design for a few years now, and for a long time my aim was to be a graphic designer over an illustrator. I don’t think you need a degree to be an illustrator, getting mine mostly just helped me work out what I wanted to be. While I did learn principles in my design degree that help me with illustration, there are heaps of online courses and other ways to learn if you’re keen!

Should you get agency experience?

  • If you can! I spent the last four years working as a visual designer in a software development company, in media and marketing, and finally at an advertising agency as a hybrid account manager/brand designer/art director. I think getting some office experience helps you manage clients and learn what is expected in business settings.

What other courses have you done?

  • The Art of Lovely Legible Lettering by Lauren Hom

  • Art Licensing for Letterers by KatieMadeThat

  • Brush Type 101 by OldSchoolNewSchool

  • Illustrated Lettering: Drawing Intricate Floral Forms by Gemma O’Brien

  • Design like Draplin: How to Make Awesome Merch

How did you learn to draw?

  • Just over time! I’ve been drawing since I was a kid and always trended towards drawing in school (much to my family’s dismay I stopped taking Maths in Year 10 and took more arts instead). We did life drawing in TAFE, and in uni I illustrated almost every project I could. It’s built up over the years to become really obvious (to me) that it’s what I want to do with my life.

How can I support you or get some fun stuff?

Hire me!

  • I’m currently accepting new projects so if you need a logo, social content, editorial illustration, packaging, apparel, posters…. let’s chat!

Recommend me!

  • I understand that you might not have a project for me, or I might not be right for a brief, so in that instance, please recommend me to anyone you think my work might be suited for! Or share my work on socials, it always makes my day.

Buy some cute merch!

  • Check out my shop here or in the navigation above, I currently have prints, stickers, cards and pins but I am adding to my shop always.

Tell Me!

  • Yeah whatever, I’m basically asking for a pat on the back here, but it honestly makes my day reading your DM’s about how my work impacts you <3

Paypal me?

  • I don’t know, I’ve just seen other people do this. If you want to send me some money for the lols (I’m kidding, it’s actually if you want to support me and keep me producing) - it’s a nice way to show me some love!

  • P.S: it’s paypal.me/jacintakay

If you’ve read this far I’ll let you in on a little secret, as soon as I hit my aim of 10,000 followers on IG and 1,000 YouTube subscribers I’m starting a Patreon with exclusive tutorials, live streams and Q&A’s! That’s right, we can all jump on stream together and draw and chat and hang out! So honestly, if you can never support me financially that’s okay, the best thing you can do is show me some love on social and tag your friends.

THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE. YOU ARE THE REASON I GET TO DO WHAT I LOVE.
